This sweater was made on the occasion of the assault rifle ban ending. The dates the ban was in effect, September 13, 1994- September 13, 2004 is knitted into one sleeve. The motif is an assault rifle, and it appears all over the sweater. The front reads "PRAISE THE LORD AND PASS THE AMMUNITION." I first heard that phrase on a punk collection called "Not so Quiet on the Western Front" way back in the eighties. More recently, the Dixie Chicks adopted the phrase in one of their songs. Originally, it was a WW2 song. I don't think it was meant to be ironic or disrespectful in any way at the time it was written. This is the first garment I attached sleeves too, and the first one I made was longer than the second. Around the cuffs are supposed to be bullets, but they don't really look like bullets very much. The back of the sweater has my initials and the year, 2004. I posted this image on KnittersforKerry.com and it generated a lot of controversy. The assault rifle ban has also generated much controversy. I didn't believe that hunters actually used assault rifles to hunt deer before I heard a week or so ago about the guy in Wisconsin who was out hunting deer with his assault rifle and killed 6 other hunters instead.
