The
short explanation is this: There are many
jobs these days where one is obligated to wear a shirt
or jacket with the word "security" emblazoned
on it. I thought it would be nice to have the option
to wear a version with a bit of elegance. The chain
link fence motif suggests argyle. The sleeves have
gold cuffs.
The
longer story is this: I went to the Ozzfest
several years back. I wore a yellow Patagonia windbreaker.
I went by myself. Nearly everyone in the arena was
wearing a black t-shirt, with the exception of a few
young women I saw wearing nothing but body paint.
There were a few Marilyn Manson fans dressed in obligatory
goth, which seemed just a bit much in the midday San
Bernadino August heat. The corpse paint was dripping
down their face with the sweat, which is not a good
look. But most people were wearing black t-shirts
that had the names of their favorite bands on them.
There was just a whole lot of "the same."
Perhaps, a handful at a time in high school, they
had a shimmer of rowdy indivdualism, but here, at
the church of Ozz, they were dime a dozen, a mass
of headbanging homogeneity. My yellow jacket had more
in common with the army of security guards working
the event. They, too, were wearing yellow windbreakers.
So when a melee broke out while Slayer was onstage,
a group of guards were dispatched to the scene up
near the stage. I just scooped up my knitting and
went with them. They didn't notice. I blended right
in.
And that's how I got to be in the mosh pit during
Slayer that year.
This was quite special, and commemorated by this sweater.
