Kate needed something to wear to the RNC protests in NY this August. It was sweltering hot out and she didn't want to wear a sweater to the event, so she suggested a skirt. It was hard to decide what kind of message to knit, and after a long talk, Dan came up with "Bush is a Turkey." Kind of says it all, and is even patriotic, given that the turkey was almost our national bird. I designed it to look like a protest sign and what look like weeds around it are motifs from a book of Turkish sock patterns. This was my first success scanning something into the Mac and then transferring it to the PC and knitting from the computer. Dan really lobbied for "Cheney's a square" for the back, but in the end I decided to promote my website on the back panel.
I had an extra panel left over and I made it into a bag for my cousin. For the other side, I made a "Banish Bush VOTE 2004 panel. I didn't line the bag, and I knew it would stretch a bit, but I didn't think it would stretch nearly to the floor! Kaya stuffed it full and paraded around Dulles Airport carrying it around before leaving to go to Kazahkstan.
